  • Artist Biography
    • Louis Aimé Japy (1840-1916): Japy was born in 1840 in Bern, Switzerland; he studied under Corot and exhibited at The Salon de Paris from 1864. He won medals at The Paris Salon in 1870 and 1873, and gold medals at The Exposition Universelles in 1889 and 1900. In 1883 Japy was honoured with membership in the Societe des Artists Francais, exempting him from Salon jury selection, and in 1906 he was made a Knight of The Legion of Honour – the highest honour that the French Government can bestow on an artist. Japy learned many things from Corot and it is possible to see in his art a soft style of painting with a dramatic treatment of light. Japy’s talents are held in high esteem, and his work can be found in museums throughout the world, including Amsterdam, Washington D.C., Manchester and Budapest.
