  • Artist Biography
    • James Holland was a British artist born in Burslem, Stafforshire in 1799. Having originaly painted still lifes, Holland became a painter of landscapes and continental canal scenes, especially in Venice. In 1831, Holland went to France on the first of his many tours to Europe. After about 1840, Holland’s style dramatically changed in Venice, he found the colorful views of this romantic city irresistible. James Holland exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1824 until 1865, and also at the British Institute. In addition, he displayed numerous works over the course of his career with the Society of British Artists. Holland was elected an associate of the Royal Watercolor Society in 1835, elevated to a member of the Royal Watercolor Society in 1857 and served as a member of the Society of British Artists from 1842 until 1848.
