Juliette Cambier Still-life With Flowers In Vase

Known as one of Belgium's premier still-life painters of the first half of the twentieth century, Juliette Cambier was born Juliette Ziane in St. Gilles, near Brussels, in 1879. She studied in Paris at the Academie Renson with the Nabis painter, Maurice Denis. Returning to Belgium, she continued her education under Louis Gustave Cambier whom she would marry within a few years. A frequent exhibitor throughout Europe she is regarded as a great still-life and portrait painter, particularly portraits of mothers and children. A close friend of Renoir, Serusier, Vuillard and Signac, she was to spend much of her time in France. Her paintings today can be seen in many of Belgium's museums including those at Ixelles, Liege, Tournai and the National in Brussels. This small but highly sensitive example of her ‘nature-morte’ painting dates to around 1910 and perfectly illustrates her skills with color and composition.
