  • Artist Biography
    • Louis Block remains somewhat of an enigma, even his birth and death dates are open to discussion. Even though in some books he is recorded as being born in 1879 this is extremely unlikely as there is an ‘L. Block’ listed as a London painter whose exhibition career commenced in that year. It is likely that biographers have misread this year as his birth date rather than the year of his debut. What we do know is that he was an extraordinarily talented painter, primarily in watercolors, of still-lifes with a trompe l’oeil quality. All of his recorded works depict library interiors with painstakingly detailed depictions of books and sometimes writing instruments. Only a couple of oils are recorded and this example entitled ‘The Corner of the Library’ is an important addition to his oeuvre. Assuming that the ‘L. Block’ recorded as exhibiting between 1879-1893 is the same artist as that of our example we know the following about his life and work. Painting from a London address at 22 Wansey Street in the borough of Walworth he first exhibited a watercolor at the Royal Society of British artists entitled ‘A Study’ in 1879. Over the next fourteen years he would show once more at the R.B.A, five times at the New Water Colour Society and on one occasion at the Royal Academy.
