    • My favorite this month is George Averhals’ Les Coquelicots. This painting expresses a whimsical charm found in the light brush work, color and composition. With deeper inspection, the flower stems shoot up from the bottom of the canvas as though they are dancing in a playful manner. George’s light-handed and thin brush work emulate the delicate nature of the flowers. The subtle colors of blues and greens applied with an upwards texture help to create a balance to the opposing bright red. The pedals appeal to a more chaotic presence. Multiple reds mix and flow with the texture in an outwardly expressive nature. The cool contained colors of the stems juxtapose the bright warm expressiveness of the pedals. Throughout his career George Averhals painted still-life and landscapes. He did venture into figures and portraits though mostly using watercolor. His beginnings started in the Impressionist genre and then onto the Modernist style that many artist of the era were involved in. – Josh Holbrook
